Student-Centred Learning

The Faculty adopts an integrated, multi-disciplinary student-centred approach in its teaching. Key features of the undergraduate curriculum include:

    • Competency Based Curriculum

As part of its academic mission, the Faculty adopts a competency-based curriculum for the BDS programme.  Undergraduates are provided with a roadmap of competencies to accomplish as they progress through the BDS programme.  At every milestone, they are specific competencies which they will need to accomplish before proceeding to the next.  With such an approach, the undergraduates will be actively engaged in planning and pacing their learning and development throughout the course.

    • Small Group Learning

Much of the pre-clinical and clinical teaching in the Faculty is delivered in small groups.  This facilitates close interaction between the undergraduates and staff.  This also provides a conducive environment for peer-led learning.

    • Technology-Enhanced Learning

Apart from conventional teaching methods, students will also engage in learning which leverages technology such as augmented and virtual reality to enhance their understanding of key clinical concepts and applications.

    • Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)

Every undergraduate is given the opportunity to participate in a research project through the UROP from Year 2 – 4 of the BDS course.  Students work on research projects in small groups supervised by staff.  At the end of the final year, their work is presented at the Faculty UROP Day.  Students also submit their projects for local, regional and international research competitions.  Many of the projects have been published in international publications.

    • Clinical Elective Programme (CEP)

Undergraduates who have interests in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or Paediatric Dentistry may also consider participating in the CEP in their third and final years.  Organised in tandem with UROP, selected students will have the opportunity to work closely with specialists in these fields to observe clinical procedures and engage in case discussions to deepen their understanding of these dental disciplines.

    • Overseas Enrichment Programme (OEP)

The Overseas Enrichment Programme (OEP) broadens our students’ educational experience by exposing them to other cultures and different learning environments.  All Year 3 and 4 students have the opportunity to spend 2 weeks in an overseas university in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Japan, China or Australia.

    • Mentorship

All undergraduates will be assigned a Faculty staff who will mentor, coach and guide them over the course of the BDS course.

The post-professional Master of Architecture is an advanced design and research program for individuals already holding a professional degree in architecture. This option provides a challenging and rigorous forum for those wishing to extend and focus their previous education in architecture. It seeks a diverse range of applicants, particularly those holding the promise of professional and academic leadership.

Successful applicants will declare a specific research area of interest and structure an integrated course of study that includes a fieldcourse, colloquium, thesis preparation, and electives. The program is oriented around a design-research thesis project. Students work closely throughout the program with faculty advisors with expertise in a declared area of interest, and gain insight from leading practitioners, theorists, and guest critics. This program is aligned with the post-professional Master of Landscape Architecture to allow students to build a cohort across the two disciplines, offering an enriched experience.

Applicants should identify research proposals within one of the areas of interest offered in the program:

Computation + Fabrication
Students in the C+F area will focus on architecture’s technological role. The impact of new and evolving advances in design technologies and the increased interface between computation and fabrication offer opportunities for research and innovation. Students in Computation + Fabrication will use design-research to interrogate the broadening impact of the increased interface between data, tools, instruments, software, and materials.

Health + Society
Students in the H+S area will focus on architecture’s social role. There are increasing needs and opportunities for design-research on the architecture of health, wellness, and well-being. Students in Health + Society will pursue design-research projects that acknowledge the complex nature of the delivery of healthcare globally and the specific nature to which architecture needs to respond.

Sustainability + Environment
Students in the S+E area will focus on architecture’s environmental role. Architecture must urgently address greater innovation in contemporary sustainability and environmental concerns. Students in Sustainability + Environment will develop design-research projects that situate architecture’s response to climate change, energy and resource depletion, and compromised natural systems.

Applicants should indicate their research intentions within one of the three areas of interest in a concise statement of no more than 1000 words. It is not necessary to declare an advisor to apply.

Graduate training and education is a continuation of medical education. The Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) has been responsible for graduate medical training and education in Singapore since 1969.

DGMS offers local and foreign doctors (also known as graduate “students”) examinations at the national level, known as Master of Medicine (MMed) Examinations. These are summative exams that include simulating clinical setting scenarios to assess doctors’ clinical competency, and they lead to specialist qualifications. Some of the MMed exams are offered jointly with prestigious Royal Colleges in the United Kingdom and this international benchmarking ensures that the exam standards and quality are maintained.

To prepare students for these exams, DGMS also conducts exam preparatory courses for several specialties. These courses usually mirror exam settings and are taught by qualified and experienced clinicians.

Doctors seeking to enhance their clinical skills in specific areas may enrol for Graduate Diploma programmes that are recognised by the Singapore Medical Council. These Graduate Diploma programmes consist of lectures, tutorials and/or clinical attachments which will allow the students to gain relevant insights, work on real-life case studies, as well as gain hands-on experience. Students have access to facilities at NUS Medicine, including a dedicated medical library and simulation labs. Click Here for more details.

This qualification will prepare you for an advanced clinical practice role by developing your knowledge and critical understanding of advanced clinical practice, leadership and management, research and education – the four pillars that underpin advanced practice – and developing skills that enable you to act with a high level of autonomy. You’ll enhance your skills in holistic and systematic assessment, complex decision making, and the provision of high-quality evidence-based interventions for patients, clients and their families. You should be supported by your healthcare employer, and, by studying while you work, your learning will be strengthened by applying theory to your scope of practice.

This programme incorporates a Non-Medical Prescribing module which, upon successful completion, enables you to gain regulatory recognition as a non-medical prescriber within your scope of practice. Click Here for more details.
